St. Ivo (also known as St. Yves) was a civil and canon lawyer who defended the poor without fee, served as a parish priest, and established a hospital.
Born in Kermartin, France, St. Ivo was a member of an aristocratic family. In 1267l, he was sent to the University of Paris, where he graduetd with a degree in civil law. He went to Orleans in 1277 to study canon law. In 1280, he returned to Brittany; having received minor orders, he was appointed "official," or ecclesiastical judge, of the archdeanery of Rennes.
Meanwhile, St. Ivo studied Scripture; it is believed that he joined the Franciscan Tertiaries during this time. In 1284, the Bishop of Treguier invited St. Ivo to become his ecclesiastical judge, and St. Ivo accepted.
St. Ivo showed great zeal and rectitude in his duties and did not hesitate to resist the king's unjust taxation. By his charity, St. Ivo gained the title of advocate and patron of the poor. He was ordained a priest and was appointed to the parish of Tredez in 1285; eight years later, he was appointed to the parish of Louannec, where he died. He was canonized in 1347 by Clement VI.
